Interview of: The Punic Wars: A Clash of Two Empires | By: Justin Fenico
14 Jan-2004

Definitely breaking the mold of the standard RTS, Punic War hopes to add more content and goodness for the role playing, strategic fanatic. Find out how in our interview.

  QUESTIONS
Q: First off, letís find out who weíre talking to from the Punic Wars team? What are your responsibilities in the creation of Celtic Kings: The Punic Wars?

A: My name is Ivan-Assen Ivanov, and Iím the lead programmer for the Celtic Kings: The Punic Wars project.

.......................................................................................................

Q: For those reading who arenít familiar with Celtic Kings, how would you describe the title and its type of gameplay?

A: Celtic Kings, and now The Punic Wars are somewhat unorthodox RTSes, where the emphasis is on strategic warfare, rather than base building and expansion, as the world is fully populated with structures at the beginning of the game. All units gain experience, and military units are lead by heroes to simplify management. Battles often involve hundreds of units, and unit specials play a very important role. The economic model is based on decentralized resources Ė you canít spend the money you have in one settlement in the barracks of another. Armies in the field must be supplied with enough food, so any longer military campaigns take some serious planning.

.......................................................................................................

Q: Put us in the mood to play Punic Wars, what exactly are we getting that Celtic Kings didnít deliver? Whatís the biggest change you made from Celtic Kings?

A: The Punic Warsí improves upon Celtic Kings by adding two new races, which are visually and functionally very different from the old races. Their different warfare and resource usage patterns open up new gameplay styles. In addition to the mighty Romans and populous Gauls, you can play with the ruthless Carthaginians, who turn both defeat and victory into gold, and the peaceful Iberians, who prefer to win the war without fighting many battles.

.......................................................................................................

Q: As we can tell simple from looking at Celtic Kings, itís a RTS game. Games like this, the Lord of the Realms series, and Age of Mythologies all seem to share a pre-industrial age. What can be said that branches Punic Wars into a different direction?

A: While it contains some fantasy elements Ė letís be honest, do you think priests were able to heal entire armies just by waving their hands in the air? Ė The Punic Wars has a strong historical flavor, rooted in the period of the three grandiose wars between Rome and the only power in the ancient world which approached its power: Carthage. While the different settings is what catches the eye for the first few hours, seasoned RTS veterans will probably find a real pleasure in the fresh gameplay ideas, like the extensive system of non-trivial unit specials, like some horse units Charge attack, which multiplies the damage of the first strike, or the Combat skill, which makes persistent units more powerful with every blow they give - or the armiesí need for food, which completely changes how military campaigns are organized.

.......................................................................................................

Q: Letís get into specifics. What type of new animations, textures, and overall graphical presentation will we see in Punic Wars?

A: The Punic Wars retains the overall art vision of the original Celtic Kings, but expands the world into the arid plains of Iberia, and the endless desert sands dotted with palm oases of Northern Africa, the heartland of the Carthaginian trade empire.

.......................................................................................................

Q: How about new upgrades? What can gamers expect to see in terms of offensive capabilities and new resources? Has have these issues been taken care of to give gamers a challenge without making Punic Wars too hard or easy, or without breaking the balance?

A: The Punic Wars doesnít add new resources to the ones present in Celtic Kings Ė gold, food, population and experience Ė but gameplay changes like capturing of supplies and the new upgrades like Carthageís Spoils of War (which rewards successful units on the battlefield with gold) or the Tribute which allows any player to turn his map domination into profits once per game Ė radically alter the ways of producing them, and converting each into the others.

We believe we have managed to add two significantly different races, with military and economically differing units, while keeping the game balanced. There is no single best, or easiest race in The Punic Wars, although youíll find you can pick one most suited to your preferred style of playing.

The Punic Wars is interesting and fun to play on different levels. The novice player will enjoy exploring the variety of upgrades and units and mastering their functions, while experienced RTS gamers will strive to find optimal combinations of unit specials, world features and race specifics.

.......................................................................................................

Q: Artificial Intelligence is always important in a RTS game. How has the A.I been tweaked to give gamers more of a humane and realistic challenge?

A: The Celtic Kings AI received a makeover for The Punic Wars. Besides teaching it to fully utilize the powers of the new races, which wasnít a small feat by itself, we taught it more tricks from the books of human players. Youíll see it skillfully choose which battles to accept and which to avoid, adapt to your choice of army types, and perform concerted attacks together with other allied AIs.

.......................................................................................................

Q: Whatís the news on a demo or full release date? Will we get a glimpse of Punic Wars sometime in the near future?

A: The Punic Wars is scheduled for a Q1 release in the US. The press will get their hands on a final version of the game later in January.

.......................................................................................................

Thanks to Mr. Ivanov for the review and keep an eye out for more info and hopefully more sneak peaks to come around Punic Warís release date.
