E3 2003 - Quick Takes

The nice lads at the BioWare booth were kind enough to give me a beer and some pretzels, oh and show me the latest development of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. KotOR is a Wizards of the Coast game and follows their DND rules. Fear not though, if you’re not a Dungeon and Dragons player, the game has been set up to allow for anyone to enjoy.

With material used from the Tales of the Jedi comics created by Dark Horse, BioWare has been able to recreate a world 4000 years before Episode 1 where 1000’s of Jedis and Siths roamed free. The story begins with 2 Jedis waging war against the Republic and winning, only then to turn to the dark side becoming Siths. With the constant struggle between the Republic and the Rebels you’re thrown into a battle only a Star Wars game could make. The game begins with your character creation. You have a choice between male/female and three types of characters. A scoundrel, who is best described as a Han Solo person, a scout who is quick and stealthy, and the soldier who kicks ass and takes names. After selecting your type, you have the choice of either a quick or custom skills creation. Quick allows the game do everything for you, but if you’d rather do it yourself you have the responsibility of making sure you balance out your character in strength, dexterity, constitution, intelligence, and wisdom. You also have 15 choices of faces (both male and female), but what’s even better is that your eyes and face change depending on your choices of becoming either a Sith or Jedi. During the game you have the opportunity to party up with two other members and up to nine different NPCs. You can assume control of anyone in your party or allow the AI to work its magic. Each character has his/her own items and accessories, but what makes life easier is the party inventory system. So as long as the weapon or item isn’t equipped to someone in the party, it’s free for anyone to use. BioWare wanted to make Knights of the Old Republic more fun and less backtracking, and annoying. The same goes for another option that allows you to quickly go back to your base if you’re in a friendly area. What’s the point of trekking across a friendly land when you can save time and click a button? There is none, thus BioWare incorporated this little handy dandy option. The game is loaded with a Star Wars atmosphere. Planets like Tatoonie and characters like Wookies fill the world incredibly well. Make no doubt that Star Wars fans will eat stuff like this up all day. One of the coolest effects that Star War fans will love is when you get to change your light saber. Finding special crystals will allow you to infuse your light saber with different colors and abilities. You’ll also get the chance to wield two light sabers at one time! The combat in Knights of the Old Republic is dealt with DND in mind but looks a lot smoother than you’d expect. Characters will block and dodge hits according to the DND rule set. It might not be real time combat that you control, but it still looks damn pretty. Even though I’m not the biggest Star Wars fan, I’m pretty excited to see the end product. With over 14,000 lines of dialogue and of course the ever popular Star Wars music, Bio Ware is serving up a dish full of Jedis and I can’t wait to dig in. - Click here for Xbox screenshots - Click here for ToTheGame's Game Info for PCCD - Click here for ToTheGame's Game Info for Xbox
